Annual Turtle Trot at Lovers Key State Park

unners, joggers and walkers can exercise and experience the beauty of Lovers Key State Park, on Fort Myers Beach, by participating in the eighth annual Turtle Trot 5K Race that kicks off at 8 a.m., May 11. The event will raise funds for a new visitor cen- ter at the park via the nonprofit Friends of Lovers Key, Inc. Participants will trek over


a path along Black Island Trail, run up a 38-foot hill and cross


two bridges as they race toward the finish line at the beach. Breakfast will be provided by Whole Foods and post-race awards will be presented at the Lovers Key Pavilion. Other event sponsors include The Vitamin Shoppe, Angel Animal Hospital, Bonita Community Health Center, Ever- glades Shirt Factory and Outfitters, Road ID and Trek Bikes.


Event registration fee: $25/adults and $15/18 and under before May 5; $30 for all May 6 to 10; $35 for all on day of race. Location: 8700 Estero Blvd. For more information or to register, call 239-463-4588, stop at the park to pick up a registration form or visit FriendsOfLoversKey.org.

Happehatchee Center Hosts Summer Youth Program


T


he Happe Spirits Eco Kids Summer Program will create opportunities for children to immerse themselves in a beautiful Florida landscape and connect with their curi- ous selves, each other and nature at the Happehatchee Center, in Estero. Aligned to the Florida state standards for middle schools and created and taught by a certified, experienced Florida educator, the program will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in two eight-day periods, from June 18 to 21 and 25 to 28, and July 9 to 12 and 16 to 19. The program’s mission is to empower children to connect with the Earth and the global community by learning how to advocate for nature and others. Students will gain knowledge that they can use at school and in their lives, experience a sense of personal growth and increased confidence in their imaginations, share ideas, learn entrepreneurial skills and get excited about the Earth. They will explore science while having fun participating in a variety of activities designed to enhance their awareness of the natural environment. Time outdoors will include walking and enjoying the stillness and beauty of nature.
