NORMAN – Based on a True Story

NORMAN – Based on a True Story Written by Heather Young Published by Xlibris Corporation

out of 5 Reviewed by Glenda Fordham www.davisfeed.ca

This charming children’s book is the heart- warming tale of young horse-lover, Prudence, and her horse Norman who overcome adversity together and in the process, each regains their self-esteem and courage.

Based on the true story of Ontario author Heather Young’s journey to rescue a down-on-his luck ex-racehorse who developed a severe eye infection that necessitated the removal of his right eye, the book follows Prudence and Norman as they become close friends at the little girl’s local riding stable. They learn to jump over fences and spend many happy hours together in the paddock. When Norman is told that he can no longer jump because his vision is impaired due to the eye infection, he is determined to prove the doctor wrong. Afraid of losing his little friend Prudence, Nor- man goes out into the field alone every day to practice jumping only to fall each time, but with a little hard work and a good friend who believes in you, Norman proves you can overcome any obstacle and have a happy wonderful life.

This is a wonderful story to be read at bedtime with your child, or let the little ones learn to read along with you and then drawn pictures of Norman in the 3 blank pages provided at the back of the book. With enchanting illustrations courtesy of Ramir Quintana, Ms. Young has woven an inspiring tale of courage, trust and loyalty, all good lessons to impart to your youngsters. Suit- able for 2yr olds and upwards. Ms. Young promises that this is the first of a series of Nor- man books so we can look for- ward to more exciting adventures and lessons to be learned. The actual story of how she discov- ered and fell in love with the real life Norman, a giant bay gelding who is the son of famed racehorse Alydeed, will be shared with The Rider readers next month when I interview both Heather and Nor- man at his home barn in Stouf- fville. In the meantime, please visit Norman’s website for news and updates www.normanthe- book.webs.com or check in at www.Barnmice.com for up-to- date news and videos of Norman.
