Celebrating 61 Years!

Website: www.whao.org Corral Chatter Bu Lindsey Farrell-Johnson

Hello again. As I sit here and try to come up with an idea to write about this month I am listening to the wind whistling outside. It seems miserable out there; freezing rain pelting the windows, strong winds, freezing cold temperatures, but I am reminded of one very important fact.... 51 DAYS TIL SPRING!!!!!! I understand that complain- ing about winter may almost seem unpatriotic to other Canadians but I have to confess... I’m not anti- winter, I’m just anti- MUD!!! I am more than happy to shovel snow, ham- mer away at frozen water buckets, and pick out balled up hooves but I am definite- ly getting tired of the muddy slop. I am very glad to see the temperature drop

below zero again so we can finish winter and get back to riding.

The best part about this time of year is the anticipation of the horse events to come. I’m sure everyone is with me in looking forward to spring and the show season which quickly follows. I see most of the saddle clubs have picked their show dates and most of them will be posted with this issue. Just as we horse people start to lose our patience with winter there will be a couple of outings to help get us in the mood. On Sunday February 24, 2013 there will be a tack sale and swap meet held at the Rockton Fair- grounds from 10am to 3pm to benefit the Rockton Fair and Ontario Saddle Club Youth Team Tournament. On Saturday, March 2,

2013 Bertie Willoughby Saddle Club will also be hosting their spring swap meet from 9:30am to 2:30pm at the Wellandport Community Centre. I’m sure that everyone can find something that they have been looking for. Pleasant Ridge Saddlery has also just announced the grand open- ing sale for their new store. It will take place from March 1-16th.

Next on the list of horse related outings is Can Am Equine Emporium March 28-31, 2013. Can Am has been moved to the Orangeville Event Centre which although it is a new location for the show, is a familiar event facility for most of us. The Orangeville Fairgrounds is an excellent facility and I can’t wait to see how this new partner- ship will run. We will be at

Can Am sharing ‘The Rider’s booth. Please come visit us and see what we have to offer this year! As for WHAO, our first event will be Extrava- ganza. We have decided to change the dates this year to June 28-30, 2013. Last year we held Extravaganza one week earlier on the week- end which it was tradition- ally held. Unfortunately we ran into conflicts with many saddle clubs and also a few breed shows as well. Hope- fully the change in dates will not only encourage even more to come to the show but will make for an easier weekend for those who were already planning to come. We are looking to change up our schedule a bit. We will be hosting an evening show on Friday but you will have to check back in soon to find out what

show it will be. We will be running our show solely in the arena this year. Ancast- er fairgrounds has an excel- lent arena which can more than accommodate our classes. We had such a great response to the show last year that we will be looking for repeat sponsor- ships and also encouraging some new relationships. I would like to inspire new partnerships with local groups and businesses and renew some old as well. If you or someone you know would like to become a sponsor, please contact myself or another one of our executive.

Lastly I am very excit- ed of the year ahead! It is WHAO’s 61st year!!!!! If we all work together it just might be possible to make the next 61 years as strong as the past!!!

Guelph, ON. - Equine Guelph is combating the num- ber one killer of horses (other than old age!) with a new eWorkshop on colic prevention, March 11 to 24. This affordable online short course is designed to help horse owners understand colic and take pre- ventative measures by following good stable man- agement practices. At a cost of only $75 plus HST, this eWorkshop could translate into thousands of dollars of savings by helping horse owners avoid the nightmare of colic.

course also qualifies for Equine Canada coaches updating credits.

As part of the colic prevention program, Equine Guelph is also launching its latest FREE online health care tool, the “Colic Risk Rater,” which will assess and calculate colic risk and provide useful feedback on management practices.

Equine Guelph’s Colic Prevention eWorkshop will cover topics that will help horse caregivers reduce colic in horses by identifying risk factors, understanding different types of colic, detecting early signs and symptoms, assessing their manage- ment plans and developing preventative strategies. Upon completion of the Colic Prevention eWorkshop, participants are eligible to receive a cer- tificate from Equine Guelph. This two-week online

Every month in 2013, Equine Guelph will be providing a practical colic prevention tip in Equine Guelph’s e-News, which will be capped off with the release of a Colic Prevention Tips poster in Decem- ber.

Equine Guelph would like to thank everyone who participated last fall in Equine Guelph’s Cana- da-wide colic survey. “Understanding the horse own- ers’ experiences with colic has assisted Equine Guelph in developing a Colic Prevention Program tailored to the industry’s needs,” says Gayle Ecker, director of Equine Guelph.
