Round Square at BHS International programme sets BHS apart

R

ound Square is a worldwide association of schools, which share a commitment beyond academic excellence to personal development and responsibility through service, international understanding, challenge, adventure, democracy and environmental stewardship. The Bermuda High School became a Global member of the Round Square organisation in 2005 following an extensive external assessment and is the only school in Bermuda to offer its students access to this internationally acclaimed programme. Round Square will inspire students

throughout the world so that their generation will strive for new levels of co-operation, communication and understanding. It has its foundation in the theories of the experiential educational philosopher, Kurt Hahn, who believed that schools should have a greater purpose beyond preparing young people for College and University. Hahn believed that it was crucial for students to prepare for life by having them face it head on and experience it in ways that would demand courage, generosity, imagination, principle and resolution. He believed that given the appropriate set of circumstances and the correct attitude, young men and women could discover their own inner strength and an understanding of the physical and social world around them. Member schools believe that the pillars of Hahn’s insight are the IDEALS on which our future is built.

BHS’s student leadership was restructured in 2010 to form an empowered and compassionate Student Executive, which embodies the IDEALS and is committed to ensuring that students and staff at BHS appreciate and value their responsibility to make a positive difference in our school, our community and in the world. The IDEALS are represented by the six Pillars: • International understanding and tolerance of others

• Democratic governance and justice • Environmental stewardship • Self-discovery through Adventure • Leadership

• Service to others

A privilege of BHS’s Global Round Square membership grants BHS students the opportunity to participate in: • International Student Exchanges with Round Square schools on five continents • Round Square International Service (RSIS) Projects - changing the lives of underprivileged communities and assisting threatened environments • Regional Service Projects - smaller scale international projects • Conferences - presented both nationally and internationally, enable student delegates from around the world and many dissimilar localities to meet and share cultural differences.

Since its acceptance into Round Square, 86 BHS students have travelled to Thailand, Peru, South Africa, England, Canada, USA, India, Australia, Scotland, Germany and Denmark to attend conferences and student exchanges and have hosted Round Square students at BHS from as many countries. In addition, 73 BHS students have worked on and funded service projects in Thailand, Peru and Costa Rica and all students at BHS have the opportunity to work on projects in Kenya, Honduras, India, Cambodia, Ladakh, Guatemala and Canada. BHS’s understanding of and commitment to the Round Square IDEALS ensures that our students are empowered and developing the skills and abilities to be the leaders and the guardians of tomorrow’s world.
