Round Square Pillar Leaders E
ach year, six IB2 students are elected as leaders of the Round Square Pillars by the staff and students. Their responsibility is to promote the ideals of that Pillar in the school. Torchbearer asked the leader of each Pillar to explain what their pillar means to them and why it is important to the school. (You can learn more about Round Square at BHS in the following pages)
Jessica Sinclair: Our student body is very diverse at BHS so it’s important for us to learn about and celebrate each other’s cultures. As Internationalism Pillar Leader I find it important to inform the students about international causes but to do it in a fun and interactive way. The main thing that I want to be achieved from this pillar is for students to appreciate each other’s background and to have a greater understanding of events that are happening around the world.
Rachel Daly: My
Pillar is Democracy and its role is to promote democracy and freedom of speech at BHS. This is done by voting for student leaders and listening to the comments of the students. The Democracy Pillar is important because it allows us to have a say in who leads our school and express our views on how to improve BHS.
Karissa Burrows: We
are surrounded every day by both the school environment and the natural environment. The role of the Environment pillar is to improve both of these living spaces. This pillar is important to BHS to help make our social environment safer and more enjoyable, as well as make our students more aware of the natural
environment and encourage and give them opportunities to make it better.
Marissa Whitecross: I feel the Adventure Pillar’s main purpose is to bring the student body together and to challenge each other in a more fun way than the other Pillars. It is important as this Pillar can create activities that the students look forward to doing, making the school environment interesting and enjoyable as well as increasing team spirit. This year for Dare Month, the Adventure Pillar challenged students to try new things like climbing club, gymnastics, singing, mountain biking and lobster diving.
Victoria Clark: The role of the Leadership Pillar Leader is to promote leadership opportunities and develop responsible role models. The Leadership Pillar is important to BHS because it promotes relationships and organisation within the classes and supports students to follow through with their ideas. The leadership structure allows for better communication and understanding.
Brittney Ferreira: My main goal as Service Pillar Leader is to encourage students to view service as an opportunity, not an obligation. It is important for our students to be exposed to the extensive variety of opportunities available so that, regardless of what their interests may be, they can participate in service that involves something they like to do. BHS gives us all so many great opportunities and we are eager to give back to our school, and local and global communities.
