SANTA ROSA, CA. ~ A com- mon saying, and one that has always plagued me with ques- tions, is: There is nothing new under the sun. I’ve never been quite sure how I’ve felt about that topic and so more than a few sleepless hours have been lost to coming to terms with it. Speaking from the only per-

spective I know, when writing a new idea for a film, short story or any narrative, there is a looming pressure for complete originality, the possibility that in one body of work you could leave your mark on history. Rarely does this happen. My desire for original- ity can leave what I’ve created so esoteric that I come to it the next morning and assume that a madman has broken into my home, fixed himself a drink and wrote a couple of pages while I was asleep. It’s been said by many that there is only a finite number of plots and even fewer charac- ter archetypes. With these odds pressing against the modern sto-

ryteller, the pressure to be com- pletely original makes being on the bottom of the ocean feel like a slight discomfort. A direction some movie makers have openly taken and one that I think serves a great purpose, the re-envisioning. Remaking a film, or rebooting a franchise is something that has had a relatively negative recep- tion until recently. The three pri- mary examples that always come to mind are: Star Trek (2009). Taking some- thing that has meant so much to one generation and applying that into a fan made collage for the next, that they might see what we saw before. 3:10 To Yuma (2007). Taking a

movie nobody cared about then and even less about now, dusting it off, and realizing the potential in the foundation of the story to make a great western for today’s

audience. 10 Things I Hate About (1999) A retelling

FUN Facts & Trivia - 5

April Fools' Day is celebrated in many countries on April 1 every year. Sometimes referred to as All Fools' Day, April 1 is not a national holiday, but is widely recognized and celebrated as a day when people play practical jokes and hoaxes on each other.

In Italy, France and Belgium, children and adults

traditionally tack paper fishes on each other's back as a trick and shout "April fish!" in their local languages.

The earliest recorded association between April 1 and foolishness can be found in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (1392). Many writers suggest that the restoration of January 1 by Pope Gregory XIII as New Year's Day of the Gregorian Calendar in the 16th century was responsible for the creation of the holiday, sometimes questioned for earlier references.
