What is the cloud? by Ben Hampton • Ben@sonomapcrepair.com

GLEN ELLEN, CA. ~ The terms “cloud storage” or “in the cloud” are something that you have probably heard of recently. But what does it really mean? This month I will explain what the cloud is, how it works and how it can help you in your life or small business. To me, the cloud is the future. It is blurring the lines between the physical and the virtual. Thanks to advances in high-speed internet it is now hard to tell which information is stored on your local person- al computer and which infor- mation is stored remotely. Some of the popular cloud services you may have heard of or use are Dropbox, Apple’s icloud, Microsoft’s Skydrive, Amazon Cloud and Google Drive.

From a user’s point of

view the “cloud” is virtual place that you save your docu- ments or other information

to. It appears to be on your computer and your informa- tion is instantly avail- able. But in reality it is being accessed through the internet. This means if you switch computers or switch to a different device like a tablet or phone your same documents and informa- tion are already on the new device, updated with the new- est version even if it was just created a few minutes ago. This is all achieved by having only one copy that all of your devices have access to thanks to high speed internet. This copy lives on a server some- where in the world. When you change a document on your work desktop it changes it through the internet on that master copy, then when you check it from your laptop at home later that night it goes out and downloads the newest

version so it appears exact- ly the same. You can now pick up working right where you left off because you have access to the same document. This technique can be used for everything from text docu- ments to photos and music. Where is your stuff? Is it safe? If it’s not really in your computer, where in the world is your information living? It is kept on a massive super storage computer known as a server. That server most likely lives in a data storage cen- ter somewhere in the cooler wealthier parts of the world. The majority of data stor- age centers are in the United States and Europe with recent growth in Asia and Australia. If your information is with Apple then it is in Oregon, if it’s with Google then you’re storing your information in Atlanta Georgia or in Finland. Are your important personal information safe when it is traveling across the world like that? Obviously is going to depend on what company or

forget to think about an over- flow and automatic filler. When we talk about balanc- ing a pond, we are also refer- ring to balancing the water chemistry. Some of the com- ponents of water chemistry that are important to monitor and control are pH, Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates. A pond with fish and plants can not be treated with harsh chemicals. We take a long term approach to water quality by using the right equipment and keeping up the maintenance. Also, we must differenti- ate between water clarity and water quality.

A swimming

pool has clear water but is a bad environment for fish. On the other hand, a pond full of algae can be very healthy for the fish but not very aestheti- cally pleasing to us.

Designing the equipment for a fountain is a bit different although the basics still apply. We start with how much water the effect (fountain) requires. Often in fountains we want the water has to recirculate more often than once every two hours as we do for a pond. It is common for the water in a fountain to turn over every twenty minutes. Such is the case if we have a small body of water but a fountainhead that demands a lot of water. A trick is to have a bypass around the filter. This allows most of the water to return to the fountain without being fil-

Graham bread was invented by Sylvester Graham in 1829, for his vegetarian diet. The Graham bread was high in fiber, made with non-sifted whole wheat flour and was made into little squares we now know as graham crackers.

The product that has given the world its best-known taste was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 8, 1886. Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a local pharmacist, produced the syrup for Coca- Cola®, and carried a jug of the new prod- uct down the street to Jacobs' Pharmacy, where it was sampled, pronounced "excellent" and placed on sale for five cents a glass as a soda fountain drink.

Amedeo Obici (Ah-may-day-o O- bee-chee), founder of Planters, was born in 1876 in the small town of Oderzo near Venice,

Italy. When Obici was old enough to read, his widowed mother would show him his uncle's glowing letters from America. Thus began Obici's dream.
