KITCHEN & PORCH REMODEL ENERGY EFFICIENT • CODE COMPLIANT • COMFORTABLE BY JAMES DOMAN/JUNE STANICH • PHOTOS COURTESY OF JUNE STANICH/SEVERNDESIGN.COM

The owners of a small Cape Cod style home in Silver Spring, Maryland decided to enlarge their home to meet the needs of their growing family. With one small child and another on the way, the kitchen was too small to accommodate an eating area and provide enough room to prepare meals. The owners chose Doman Custom Carpentry, LLC to do the remodeling, based on the company’s expertise in energy-efficient design, team of talented and licensed sub-contractors, as well as Doman’s attention to detail and record of satisfied clients.

The project consisted of a 23’x16’ kitchen replacement with sitting area and a 11’x 9’ screened-in porch. The old kitchen was converted to an office and the existing dining room was opened up to improve flow between the two rooms.

Code and Licensing Maryland adopted the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) early last year; to date, it is the only state to do so. All local jurisdictions are required to adopt and enforce the new energy conservation code, and Montgomery County, where the home is located, required all building permits issued aſter July 2012 to incorporate it. Actual enforcement was delayed until September 2012.
