ground cover, and herbaceous plants, as well as an- nual and perennial flowering plants that include grasses, wildflowers, bulbs, and ferns. Tis mix of plants has the added benefit of providing food and shelter for buterflies, ladybugs and other beneficial insects, and birds.


You may also want to consider adding some “edible landscaping” to your property, which can do dou- ble duty. Rather than planting purely ornamental plants and shrubs, you can combine fruit-bearing shrubs, vines, herbs, vegetables and flowers. Tese will not only add variety to your landscape but provide food your table, an economical and very eco-friendly move! Blueberries, elderberries and Nanking Cherries can be beautiful additions to Mid-Atlantic gardens.


Finally, it’s also easy to plant foliage that helps you conserve energy in your home. Planting deciduous trees on the property’s southern exposure will pro- vide shade in the summer while permiting sunlight to filter through during winter, thus helping to lower energy costs.
