Young North West engineers honoured
The region’s best young engineers were honoured recently at the North West Aerospace Alliance’s New Talent Awards. The ceremony, held at
Liebherr unveils new Toulouse logistics centre
Liebherr-Aerospace Toulouse is expanding its facilities by building a two-storey logistics centre. Construction started in mid-November 2012, with the new logistics centre being scheduled to commence operations at the end of 2013. The building will house all logistic-related activities, including goods receiving, incoming quality inspection, warehousing, finished goods warehousing and shipping – as well as office areas for administration, purchasing, supplier quality assurance and other support functions for logistics. The two buildings currently accommodating logistics will then be used to house the assembly shop, the production and the repair shop for heat exchangers. Liebherr-Aerospace says it will now be able to optimise
the industrial processes at its Toulouse site. The investment will allow the company to further enhance its performance regarding quality and on-time deliveries and to even better support its air framer and operator customers.

the Imperial War Museum, Manchester, saw prizes handed out to the region’s brightest and best, along with the training providers which support their work. Speaking at the awards was Kelvin Davies (left), project lead of the UK Sports Technology Partnership at BAE Systems. The top prize for the North West’s Best Apprentice, went
to Bradley Hodgeson (second left) of BAE Systems, sponsored by Neville Gee. The runner-up prize, sponsored by Preston College, was awarded to Zayanam Mansor of Hycrome. Beth Sherbourne (far right), senior procurement officer,
MBDA Missile Systems spoke about her experiences as an apprentice after she was named Higher Apprentice of the Year in the National Apprenticeship Awards last year. Dr David Bailey, operations director at NWAA, said: “The
New Talent Awards are a significant part of the calendar for young engineers in the region. It’s great to see the exciting activities that these young people are involved in. There is a skills gap in the engineering sector and these young award winners represent the future of the industry.” The awards are part of the NWAA’s ‘Take off In Aerospace’ campaign aimed at encouraging young people into the industry
by changing the image of aerospace and engineering jobs.

Fraunhofer launches energy innovation cluster
The Fraunhofer Institute claim that in the medium-and long- term, power generation will still be mainly dependent on fossil fuels, since renewables can only cover percentages of today’s electricity demand. This is the reason why it is essential for the aerospace sector to develop new emerging concepts that are capable of significant decreases in the emissions and reductions in the fuel consumption. On February 20, 2013 the Fraunhofer-
Gesellschaft announced its new cluster of innovation ‘AdaM – Adaptive Production
for Resource Efficiency in Energy and Mobility’. Together with 21 partners from industry, the Fraunhofer Institutes for Production Technology IPT and for Laser Technology ILT will be seeking new technologies and concepts to improve the resource efficiency in the fields of power generation and mobility. The main aim is to implement new turbomachinery concepts and component designs that enable measurable reductions in CO2 emissions and increases in the
efficiency of energy conversion.
