College transformation gets green light


Oldham’s area planning committee has approved plans for the first phase of Oldham College’s capital development programme, designed by Aedas, that will see its Rochdale Road campus transformed into a 21st century learning hub. Work began on site on 4th February. This first phase sees the development of a five-storey Learning Hub, situated on the corner of Middleton Road and Rochdale Road. The building


Equine design Bath architecture practice Stubbs Rich has won a


competition to design a new visitor centre that could safeguard the future of horse rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming charity HorseWorld. The proposed development at Whitchurch, near Bristol, also includes the building of new homes on brownfield land around the existing HorseWorld visitor centre, which is now too small to cope with demand. Listed buildings on the site, along with the current centre, would be renovated and converted into homes, with the money raised through the development of the homes being used to pay for the new centre. Stubbs Rich partner David Beckett, who devised the designs for HorseWorld, said: “After receiving our brief from HorseWorld, we thought carefully about how best to meet the client’s goals in what is quite a complex and sensitive project. We are delighted to

CIBSE, supporter of Ecobuild 2013 The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) is a lead supporter at this year’s Ecobuild, which will be held at ExCel in London on 5-7 March 2013. The three day event encompasses an exhibition, conference and seminars from industry experts covering an array of subjects promoting sustainability through practice and design. CIBSE’s stand (N1150) will be devoted to building performance and the engineering excellence that underpins the world’s best buildings. Showcased on the stand will be the exemplar buildings, technologies, systems and products that feature in the CIBSE Building Performance Awards, which take place on 5 February 2013. Sharing knowledge is an essential part of what CIBSE strives to achieve in setting standards for building services engineers and improving building performance. There will be membership briefing sessions for those wanting to discuss, obtain or upgrade their CIBSE membership. Seminars and case study

RIBA International Design Competition: London Vauxhall – The Missing Link


RIBA Competitions has announced the launch of a new international design competition for Vauxhall on London’s South Bank. Vauxhall is at the heart of a huge new Area of Opportunity and Vauxhall One, the Business Improvement District (BID) for Vauxhall, are seeking design ideas to improve and enhance the public realm, providing the ‘Missing Link’ between


the New US Embassy Quarter and the cultural offering of London’s South Bank. The competition is open to registered architects, landscape designers and architects, urban designers and students of these disciplines worldwide. As with the New York ‘High Line’ competition multi-disciplinary design teams are encouraged. Two copies of a single A1


board (one laminated for outdoor use) containing design ideas are required for stage one and it is the intention to shortlist three schemes for the second stage with each shortlisted entrant receiving honoraria of £2,000 + VAT. There will also be a prize for the best student entry of £500. All entries will be exhibited during April 2013 at both the Garden Museum and on an outdoor cultural trail through the parks and railway arches of Vauxhall.
