Gardens. In modernising the tired interior, the impractical cellular spaces were rationalised and 'old and new' elements were carefully juxtapositioned to dramatic effect. The staircase was used to create a feature backdrop behind the new glazed panels to the ground floor entrance area. The installation of large modern mirrors on each landing were used to link all floors, bringing more light and a sense of openness to the internal stair well.

It is proposed that the facades will be retained and, behind, there will be a residential building facing the vibrant St James’s Street and prestige offices facing Bury Street. James Hindle, Director, TateHindle, said: “Our redesign will blend the historic with the modern. By retaining the facades and the ground floor retail space, the view from the street will remain broadly the same, but above will be four 3- bedroom luxury, single-floor apartments and a 4-bedroom duplex penthouse covering two floors plus 10,300 sq ft of high quality office space.”
