THE SUMMIT THE SUMMIT

TYPE: Student accommodation LOCATION: Leicester, De Montfort University PROJECT ARCHITECTS: maber

The project involved the redevelopment of a former hosiery factory on a prominent corner site in the immediate proximity of De Montfort University in Leicester. The brief was to create a better kind of student accommodation, leading eventually to students vacating local housing stock. Maber wanted to usher in a new era of high quality student accommodation and free up housing for local people, including first-time buyers and families. The result is a stunning new 66-metre high elliptical tower creating a new landmark at the Western Gateway to the city. Prior

to completion, there was a concern that the elliptical tower might look out of place, but, with unwavering support from Leicester City Council Planning Department, upon completion, the overwhelming demand for flats, which were fully let ahead of schedule just shows how popular the building is. Fergus Lowe, director from the Leicester office was behind the project, which was completed in September 2012.
