A CAREER IN SOCIAL MEDIA

In a Climate Where Finding a Job is Proving Difficult for even the most Qualified Amongst us, is there an Easier way into a Highly Enviable Career in Social Media?

Having an online presence has become critical, and businesses are increasingly turning to social media to build brand affinity. It has revolutionised the way in which companies speak to their customers, and it has changed the way that we work. The emergence of social media has opened up a whole array of new job opportunities. Whether you’re interested in managing an online community, marketing, writing content or strategic planning, then social media can lead to what many would consider a dream career. These roles are creative, fun, and what’s more, you can spend the day blogging, posting and Tweeting on your favourite sites.

Graduates and professionals from all backgrounds are competing to

on how to improve the products, website content and internal processes. What I can provide to the business is Voice of the Customer.”

For the retailer, contracting a company like Sitel to manage their customer service through social media is not only a cheaper option than partnering with a bespoke social media agency but also one that leverages their decades of offline customer care expertise. Outsourced call centres have in-depth product knowledge and know the customer-care processes incredibly well. And for Andrea, she gets to work directly with the brand and product specialists, receives extensive social media training, and has direct exposure to the business. The insight and experience Andrea

gains from working on the account is just as valuable, if not more, than working directly for a social media agency.

“I think that businesses are getting on board with the idea that call centres are a better option than external marketing agencies for social media. Far from being dead- end places to work, outsourced call centres provide a great opportunity for graduates who want a career in social media. You can have a lot of ownership, build relationships across the business and get great job satisfaction as a result.”

GRADS AUGMENTED REALITY

WTF is Augmented Reality? By downloading the Grads.co.uk AR application (just scan the QR code to the left) you can bring this page to life…intrigued? Augmented Reality is the latest gadget which allows companies and potential employers to grab an audience’s attention. Take for example, you get handed a boring leaflet, you’re just about to throw it in the bin, but then, you switch over to the AR application on your phone and a message from beyond is brought straight through to your phone.

get into the field. However, only the cream of the crop gets the job offers, which begs the question, is there another way in?

Three years ago, Andrea Bowers started working for Sitel, a call centre outsourcer. ‘Call centres’ and ‘social media’ couldn’t sound further apart – yet under closer scrutiny, the opportunities realised by Andrea whilst working for Sitel write the case for comparison.

After six prosperous years of working in the retail environment, Andrea recognised that the recession was going to impact her career, and so decided to make the move to Sitel, as they offered better prospects to develop her skills.

Responsible for managing Twitter feeds, Facebook pages, and YouTube channels, Andrea’s job begins to sound increasingly up the street of a social media wannabe. Having started out on the email and live-chat team at Sitel, Andrea now works in social media on the account of a leading consumer goods retailer at Sitel. She actively responds to customer-care and product-related queries, and works with the client to create the social media guidelines for their global teams.

“I view my role as so much more than just PR or marketing – I have an insight into what the customer wants, and can therefore feedback
