NUS CALLS FOR NEW LOANS SYSTEM FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS


NUS says the plans, which are designed to be cost-neutral to the government, would offer loans to poorer students who were seeking professional qualifications, as well as create employer-government partnerships to fund part-time study alongside work, and a third type of loan would fund a set number of loans for other talented postgraduate students.


Rachel Wenstone, NUS Vice- President (Higher Education), said: “Postgraduate education is vital for some professions and an important part of their continuing development for many people but for too long access has been based on ability to pay ever increasing fees upfront.


“Apart from the fact that it’s logical to have more people in postgraduate study as it has a stimulating effect on the economy, at the moment there’s a barrier to entry for poorer students that’s immoral and that can’t be fixed through commercial loans.”
