TO MARKET To market,
FARMERS' MARKET TRADERS ARE BRAVING THE WINTER WEATHER TO PROVIDE SOME OF THE STAPLE WEST COUNTRY FOODS ON WHICH WE RELY
D
uring the winter months while we hibernate indoors, a food shopping trip becomes one of necessity rather than
pleasure, the mind drawn to enjoyable strolls around farmers' markets once had during the warmer months. Despite this the stallholders at many markets battle all winds and weathers to serve us with the West Country’s freshest and finest produce. In Somerset’s Cathedral city of Wells for example, the hats, thick coats and gloves don’t stop the welcoming smiles that greet fully togged shoppers who turn out in ‘welly’ weather to get their hands on the quality food they have become dependent on.
Where: The Market Place, Wells, Somerset. When: Every Wednesday 9am – 2.30pm
WELLS FARMERS MARKET
Louise Hall, co-ordinator for Somerset Farmers Markets says..
The Wells market takes place all year round and every week! Even now you will be able to get a full range of seasonal produces minus the summer fruits and salads and the warm welcome from the producers will more than compensate for the chill in the air! There’s a great selection of root vegetables and meats to make hearty stews and Simply Cooking have a great range of puddings and pies for comfort food! There are huge benefits to shopping directly from the producers – the personal contact and free cooking advice, great deals can be had especially if you bulk buy for the freezer, the knowledge that your money is staying within the local economy and sustaining local farming families and artisan producers of breads and cheeses and even pasta. Being weekly ensures that customers and producers build up a close bond and shopping becomes a weekly social experience which cannot be replicated in a large supermarket and ensures that Wells remains a true Somerset Market town ! ( well city!)
Beautifully fresh seasonal fruit and veg from Portbridge Farm Produce, grown in Chew Magna, Bristol. INSET: Smiley faces and happy greetings whatever the weather!
