For most of us the new year is a fresh start. A chance to say goodbye to all those festivities. No more turkey and not even a hint of sausages wrapped in bacon. Lots more exercise and a measured amount of healthy eating. For FOODLOVERs things are always a little more complicated than just ‘giving things up’, for food isn’t just our fuel, it is who we are. Healthy eating is also commonly regarded as boring with very little variety available to live life happily in the company of well-being. Catch up with Tom Smart on page 9 as he provides some tips on leading a healthy lifestyle that shouldn’t drive you mad, as well as a host of recipes using some not so well know foodstuffs. Then some inspiring ideas to make sure you enjoy that most important of meals – breakfast!
On page 20 we speak to Liam Finnegan, Head Chef at The Castle Hotel, Taunton, to find out how his Irish roots and classical training influence his food, while in our producer highlight on page 42 we speak to Pyne’s of Somerset, a family-run butchery who’s new farm shop near Bridgewater has recently been voted as Best Butcher’s Shop in the country. If you are thinking of taking up a new hobby this year then why not flick to page 30 and enjoy a bread making lesson from Tom Hazzledine of Baker Tom’s, accompanied by some top tips from the man himself to make sure you will be able to utilise the baker analogy yourself in no time at all!
On page 36 our Field to Plate feature gives you some advance warning on the approaching hungry gap as well as columns from local farmers in the region. Then try some scrumptious recipes for Shrove Tuesday on page 27, a few ideas to spice up Valentine’s Day on page 24, some New Year giveaways on page 7 and so much more! Just remember – it’s only three hundred and something days until Christmas!
