on a very wet picnic table sitting on a swampy patch of ground. I stood in an inch or so of water and cooked our meal. As the meat sizzled and the potatoes boiled and the sky cleared, my mood liſted correspondingly, until aſter we’d eaten and the dishes were washed I became positively cheerful. Aſter we’d finished, I counted our $28.50, a contribution to the American economy I was glad to make. “You’re right, Darling,” I told John. “Merchants and first-rate salespeople.” “Oops – incoming,” John said, as the


first new raindrops slanted down in thin sheets. Hurrying, we cleared the table of the Coleman stove and wet dishes, stowing everything neatly in the van. Ten we sat comfortably on the edge of the bed and drank coffee out of a thermos and watched the rain. We could hardly see through the deluge. “It has occurred to me,” I told John,


“that most Americans take their spring break holiday in California, not the Oregon coast.” “It has occurred to me too,” said John.


Te rain pounded on the roof of the van and streamed past the windows, but our valiant little space heater cast such a glow that steam rose from our clothes.
