Transports. Head chef Henry Leon and his several assistants and “sous chefs” accepted the award on behalf of Freightliner (a “trophy” with a toy BBQ perched atop) and claimed bragging rights until the next time ATA sponsors some sort of cooking competition. The event raised $2600 for the Arizona

Transportation Education Foundation (ATEF) and gave a lot of folks a chance to network, sample some really great food, check out the trucks and the vintage Highway Patrol cars on display and enjoy some rip-roaring “trucker” music. Celebration of the 75th continues

with a gala dinner October 27 at the 2012 Leadership Conference. And at the end of the year, ATA leaders will install a “time capsule” on the grounds of our headquarters to mark this important milestone in the life of Arizona’s longest continuously surviving trade association.

2012 ROAD CHECK – JUNE 5, 2012 The largest-ever contingent of

civilian observers from ATA-member companies—74 in all—participated in Road Check 2012 held June 5-7 at the Parks Rest Area west of Flagstaff in Bellemont. Of that group, 21 went on ride-alongs to observe roadside inspections with commercial vehicle enforcement officers from DPS, while other civilian observers shadowed other officers doing roadside inspections. east Flagstaff, the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety parked one of its command vans and set up its D.A.R.T. service. D.A.R.T. stands for Driver Awareness Regulatory Training— the brainchild of DPS Sgt. Eloy Ramirez to assist truck drivers with their compliance questions. Special guest for the three-day Road Check event was FMCSA’s Assistant Administrator and Chief Safety Officer Jack Van Steenburg, who showed that he’s inspected a truck or two in his day. coordinated check-in and scheduling of civilian observers—no small task.Walmart Transportation hauled ATA’s Share the Road trailer up to Flagstaff for concurrent events at the Pilot Travel Center and at a Walmart store. And Jonesco Trucking provided a sumptuous barbecue lunch at their Bellemont terminal for officers and observers alike on both Tuesday and Wednesday. What a great experience for all. When Road Check 2013 rolls around next June, don’t miss it.

TWO EVENTS RAISE PAC FUNDS IN

ELECTION YEAR SPRING GOLF TOURNAMENT – APRIL 27, 2012 With a goal of raising $20,000 for

ATA’s Political Action Committee for the two-year election cycle (2012-2013), ATA PAC Chairman Bart Wilson (On Time Express), the PAC Committee and the tournament chairman—Mike Barr of Cummins Rocky Mountain—were counting on a good turnout to kick off this year’s fundraising. In recognition of ATA’s 75th Anniversary, greens fees were set at $175 and golfers were asked to make a minimum $75 personal PAC contribution. Held at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, the tournament was an

and advocacy on behalf of our members is a critical component of our government relations efforts,” said Wilson. “Although it’s easy to be turned off by the partisanship seen at all levels of government, the plain truth is that our industry must work within the political environment to protect our interests, whether they be taxes, the threat of toll roads or needless new regulations,” Wilson said. “This means to be effective in the

political environment we must help elect legislators who understand and support our industry, and build good working relationships with those elected officials. Having a strong PAC is essential to supporting good candidates,” Wilson said.

TEXAS HOLD ‘EM TOURNAMENT – AUG. 29, 2012 The annual Texas Hold ‘Em Poker

Night was a great success again this year, thanks to Co-chairs Mike Most (Michael Most Trucking) and Kenny Palmer (Transtar Insurance Brokers). Since the event was the second of two PAC fundraisers held in 2012, Bart Wilson’s PAC Committee helped ensure a good turnout through the calls and emails they sent requesting participation and support. Winners were: 1st Place – Tommy

Lyons of Vanguard Truck Centers; 2nd Place – Rich Harris of On Time Express Inc.; and 3rd Place - Jeff Astraus, also of On Time Express Inc. In addition to the packed house for poker, ATA Director of Administration Rhonda Merkel ran an ongoing “Left, Right, Center” game out in the ATA lobby. Thanks to National Truck Services Group (formerly SW Truck Insurance) for sponsoring the food and drinks, and to the many companies that donated raffle prizes. The event raised $4,535 for the PAC and an additional $630 for the Arizona Transportation Education Foundation. It is never too late to contribute

to ATA’s PAC. By Arizona law, political contributions must be personal funds. For information on how to contribute, go to www.arizonatrucking.com, click on the Governmental Relations tab and download the PAC contribution form.
