WHAT’S IN A NUMBER?


I love baseball—but then, I never had a chance to NOT love baseball! As the eldest child of a minor league player, some of my earliest memories are of watching my dad play shortstop for the Youngtown (Ohio) A’s and of going with him to the old Municipal Stadium in Cleveland to watch the Indians play.


I can’t tell you how many baseball games I’ve watched in the years since, but my love of the game that my daughter characterizes as “a bunch of fat men in bad uniforms running around in a circle” is stronger than ever. I think one of the reasons I love the sport so much is that, in the truest sense, baseball is a game of numbers—and I love numbers too! It is virtually impossible to describe something that’s going on in baseball without using the language of baseball—numbers.


We play nine innings, field nine players, and have a total of 27 outs per team (unless the game goes to extra innings). Players run around 1st, 2nd and 3rd base to reach home plate, to score one run. We use terms like batting average; on-base percentage; earned run average; [number of] players left on base; stolen base percentage; [number of] hits, runs, errors or runs batted in; slugging percentage; signing bonus; won-lost percentage; ahead in the count; 1-2-3 inning or the all-important “shutout”—in which the most important number of all is ZERO!


By now you’re thinking—what does this have to do with anything, let alone trucking? Excuse the pun, but I see a number of parallels between the game of baseball and the business of trucking. We too are in a “numbers” game and we have our own language. For example, eighteen wheelers; fifth wheels; doubles; triples; super-single tires; tri-axles; double-deck trailers; number of trucks; 11 hours of driving, 14 hours on-duty, 34-hour restart; 2290 form; fuel surcharge percentage; freight rates; third-party logistics; earnings per share; tonnage index; driver turnover rate; signing bonuses; percentage of utilization or the biggie—operating ratio—trucking’s own “won-lost percentage.” In turn, our supplier members use related numerical terms to determine their success.
