At ATA, we manage “by the numbers” and we have our own numerical language. We talk in terms of how many members; [number of jobs] they provide; how many votes [to pass this bill or defeat that one]; how much in our PAC to support good candidates; net operating income; sponsorship dollars; ATEF donations; lobbying costs; form 990 tax returns;
and run Safety & Maintenance Council meetings and rally at the Capitol when our industry’s voice needs to be heard.

What’s in a number? In business and in much of life, success or failure likely depends on the numbers. You depend on profitable numbers to support your business, make payroll, provide employee benefits and pay your ATA dues. With a very small staff, ATA depends on significant numbers of volunteers to plan and stage the Truck Driving Championships, Road Check, Leadership Conference and Safety Awards Reception; attend DataQ appeals meetings; plan
What lies ahead for the next 75 years at ATA? Will we grow and thrive? Will the revenue be there to fight the political battles and support critical programs? Who are the volunteers of the next five, ten, 15 years?
It’s the bottom of the ninth. The score is tied. It’s Government Over- regulation – 5, Industry Profitability – 5. ATA is up to bat. Who will win the game?
On a final note, I’m working on an important item on my “bucket list” —to watch a game in every MLB stadium before I play my last inning. Sixteen down, 14 to go.
