ATEF LOGS ANOTHER BANNER YEAR

BY ROBERT “CHIP” DIRCKS, ATEF CHAIRMAN

(Dircks Moving & Storage)

Just three-and-a-half years since it

was chartered, the Arizona Transportation Education Foundation (ATEF) has racked up some impressive accomplishments and established its role as the provider of ATA’s safety education programs now and in the future. Here are some highlights of 2012 so far: SHARE THE ROAD/TEENS &TRUCKS – The Share the Road program was started by ATA back in 2003 under a small grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, and has continued each year through September of 2012, moving under the auspices of ATEF in 2009. Unfortunately, grant funding for this program ended September 30. While we hope to obtain private funding to continue the program, its future is uncertain. But there is little doubt about its importance in teaching motorists how to operate their cars safely around large trucks. In late 2009, we integrated the Teens

& Trucks program developed by ATA into Share the Road, and began a comprehensive outreach program in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Public Safety to reach high school driver education students with this life-saving information. Our Share the Road trailer, donated

byHurley Transportation, and another owned by Michael Most Trucking made frequent stops at high schools, safety fairs and other events around the state, reaching over 6000 kids during 2011 and approaching that number so far this year. It would be impossible to name every single ATA-member company that has committed professional drivers and tractors to haul our trailer to

events, as well as to teach side-by-side with ATA staff and DPS officers presenting Share the Road/Teens & Truck at dozens of high schools. This testimonial received by ATEF from Red Mountain High School (Mesa) teacher Rich Hamilton says it best: “The Teens and Trucks Program was

outstanding. The information and strategies it teaches kids is very well laid out and professionally done. The handouts, lesson plans, and videos were very informational and educational. The tractor trailer demonstration made a deep impression on each student and provided proof of what the officers were teaching. This program and its presenters were an excellent way to enhance my curriculum as a Mesa Public Schools Traffic Safety Teacher and well worth the two days. I would definitely like them to become a part of my core group of presenters utilized each semester.” We also salute DPS Director Bobby

Halliday and the DPS Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau for faithful support of Share the Road/Teens & Trucks over the past three years. We are looking forward to rolling

out our new ATEF-produced “Teens & Trucks: Curbing Distracted Driving” novice driver curriculum over the next several months. The curriculum was unveiled at a news conference with NTSB Chairwoman Deborah Hersman held in conjunction with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual conference last month in Portland, Maine, and will be distributed nationally by CVSA.

TRANSPORTING THE GLOBAL ECONOMY:MOVING 21ST CENTURY OVERSIZED LOADS. Our ATEF staff has been working on this much-needed research report for nearly two years under contract to the national Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) Foundation. The report provides an overview of the heavy-specialized industry in the U. S. through its focus on four key industrial segments—massive contributors to the nation’s GDP that could not function without the services of heavy- specialized carriers: construction; energy/ utilities; manufacturing; and mining!
