Carriers & Rigging Conference serving as project advisors, and following a months- long literature search, our staff learned that very little actual data exists to quantify the contribution of heavy-specialized transportation to these economic sectors. However, the profiles of each of the sectors unmistakably reveal their interdependency on heavy-specialized transportation. In addition to collecting permit data

from about two-thirds of the states, ATEF also designed, and helped SC&RA conduct, a survey of a cross-section of heavy-specialized trucking and/or crane and rigging operators during July 2012. The 275 companies that responded represented all sizes and types of carriers from all geographic regions of the U. S. and their responses provided some valuable data for the report. Once published later this year, SC&RA plans to distribute “Transporting the Global Economy” to traffic engineers, regulators and legislators to help further break down the barriers to efficient heavy-specialized transportation.

FLEET ANDINDIVIDUAL SAFETY AWARDS – Thanks to co-sponsorship from HELP/PrePass, Transtar Insurance Brokers and the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the new safety awards programs established in 2010 are drawing greater participation and support than ever. I hope you’ll read the safety awards features elsewhere in the Yearbook and think seriously about entering your company, safety professional, maintenance tech or drivers for awards. If your driver is selected as one of the four Drivers of the Quarter, he or she has a one-in-four chance of being selected Driver of the Year and earning a $1000 cash prize sponsored by ATEF and funded by Transtar. I would sure like those odds!

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – For the past two years, ATEF has awarded $5000 in scholarships each year to dependents of trucking industry employees (see sidebar for this year’s winners). Thanks to the generosity of ATEF Board members Bill Ewing and Kevin Knight in underwriting the bulk of the scholarships, ATEF has been able to bank other scholarship donations to earn at least a little interest for the future. We on the ATEF Board contract with the non-profit Scholarship Management Services, which screens and ultimately selects the final applicants.

Arizona Trucking Association 2012 Yearbook

In tight times, programs that offer a free

benefit your employees are hard to come by. ATEF is proud to offer ATA members and their employees the opportunity to apply for these scholarships. When applications are opened for next year’s scholarships, please help us by posting promotional flyers in employee areas and encouraging your personnel or their dependents to apply.

ANNUAL ATEF AUCTION – Proceeds from the 2011 auction more than doubled

from 2010 and were critically important to the work of ATEF that is not supported by grants. Auction Chairman Shon Rasmussen (RWC International) and his committee pulled out all the stops to get great donations and encourage participation at last year’s Leadership Conference. We appreciate the support of all the members who have donated to ATEF. With the loss of our Share the Road grant after September 2012, your support this year and in the future will be more important than ever!
