The Christmas Mouse

All spick and span was Mrs. Mouse Emerging from her little house. Her children small were fast asleep So all alone she went to peep.

The cook was busy baking pies Quite unaware that two bright eyes Were watching as she mixed and baked And iced the fruit-filled Christmas cake.

The mouse observed, with great relief, The family cat – a well-known thief, Was thrust into the cold back-yard. The wind was chill. ‘Twas snowing hard.

She knew she must be quiet and fast To glean a small, mouse-sized repast. She woke her children, spoke severely; She loved all six of them most dearly. “Now stay indoors and please be good As well-behaved mice-children should!”

Her thimble bucket filled with food That smelt divine and tasted good, She soon rejoined her family And said “I’ll take you out to see The stars and tinsel, tree and lights That celebrate a special night.”

They stood there in a tiny row Touched softly by the firelight’s glow. The air was full of lovely smells, Outside the silver sound of bells Was heard upon the frosty air. The six small mice could only stare.

Mrs. Mouse knew not the reason For the glories of the season; She felt quite sad and all alone Now that dear Mr Mouse had gone. She had a shrewd suspicion that He had been eaten by the cat!

When everyone had gone to bed There came an old man, dressed in red. The little mouse could plainly see Bright parcels placed beneath the tree.

Beside the fire the old man sat, Upon his knee the family cat. “Come, little mouse. Do not take fright, This is a very special night.

Puss will be good and sheathe her claws.” Said smiling, kindly Santa Claus.

As they supped on wine and cake and pies The mouse could see the cat’s bright eyes. Said Puss “Tonight Peace has its way. Tomorrow is another day!”
