TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones

Thinking of buying the iPhone 5 and already own a Mac computer; then watch out! You will not be able to get it to work with a Mac OS of 10.5 or older. Apple is very ruthless about built-in obsolescence and will only allow the previous 2 OSs to work with any new hardware. If you are plugging in to a Windows PC, then it will be a different matter as they don’t seem to be able to enforce that and it will work even with XP. So, it might cost more than just the price of a new phone.

Played on our first Windows 8 machine today, different, but the same things can still be found if you look hard enough. One thing to watch out for though is the Starter Edition of Office (where you get Word and Excel FREE) has been removed. You now have to buy Office as before; after a trial period. Watch out for deals in PC World where you get to buy a version

with just one use. We would always suggest you buy the 3 user version. With Windows 8 again; it comes with the new version of Internet Explorer (IE10) and as you might expect, it works slightly differently. So if you are used to certain older websites working with your current browser, they may not work as designed and may look slightly different with the new browser, in particular Microsoft Exchange. If that affects you, then why not give Google Chrome a go. The Yelverton Exchange will be upgraded to Super Fast BB by the end of 2013 we have heard - (Definition of Super Fast is up to 80-100mb) Let’s wait and see shall we, what actual effect that will have? I suspect you will need to have different equipment installed and a new contract before an improvement will be seen, but I am just a cynic!
