Congress Cutting

Demonstration A Hit Cutting events at the 46th annual All

American Quarter Horse Congress wrapped up with a Cutting demonstration, sponsored by Nutrena. Three of Cutting’s top perform- ers combined to give nearly 1,500 spectators insight into the sport. Chubby Turner, Lindy Burch and Phil

Rapp each cut three cows, all while ex- plaining each maneuver and their strategy behind not only their entire ride, but regard- ing each cow. Burch, an NCHA Hall of Fame rider,

owner and breeder, emphasized the impor- tance of having a plan, but also of not being afraid to be flexible. “If you can start your run smoothly,

most of the time your run will end that way,” Burch said. “I always like to take time on the first cut to make sure I have a good cow.”

Burch also talked about the importance

of staying positive and never showing dis- appointment to the judges if things don’t go as planned. Phil Rapp, the winningest competitor in

NCHA history with earnings in excess of eight million dollars, echoed Burch’s advice, noting the importance of planning and giv- ing yourself every advantage you can. During Rapp’s first cut, he noted some

of things that add credit: “Use your horse’s ears as a gun sight,” Rapp said. “Get your horse eye to eye with the cow.” Turner, a professional trainer, 2004

NCHA Open World Champion and NCHA Past President also enjoyed the demonstra- tion.

“There was a really good crowd here

that gained a better perspective on the sport of Cutting,” Turner said. “This opportunity was really unique since not everyone here has ever seen Cutting before.” Overall, the 2012 Congress Cutting Demonstration was a huge success.
