the fence work, timeless champion Doug Williamson, Bakersfield, Calif., claimed the Open Bridle Championship at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity aboard Hes Wright On (Lenas Wright On x Shesa Lota Nic), owned by Gardiner Quarter Horses. Williamson guided the 9-year-old
stallion to a 218.5 in the rein work, and then conquered an uncooperative cow in the fence work for a 224 – the highest score of Thursday’s Open Bridle finals. The Championship paid $6,076. The Open Bridle Reserve
Champion was Jake Telford, riding Nabisco Roan for Holy Cow Performance Horses. Telford and the stallion scored a 440 composite to earn $4,774.
Justin Lawrence Claims Open Hackamore Championship on Bettin Yer Smart It was an emotional victory in the
Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Hackamore class for Alzada, Montana trainer Justin Lawrence, who won the Championship aboard Bettin Yer Smart (Smart Little Lena x Bet Yer Boons x Peptoboonsmal), owned by Debra Brown and Larry Licking. Lawrence guided the roan stallion to a 438.5 com- posite score, earning $7,560. The Reserve Champion was Skeets
Oak Peppy (Skeets Peppy x Oak Ill Be x Ill Be Smart), owned and shown by Clayton Edsall. Their 435.5 composite score earned $6,048.
Monica DeBie Wins Limited Open Futurity Championship On Full Throttle Pepinic Guided by faith – both in her high-
er power and her stellar fence horse – Monica DeBie, Tulare, Calif., piloted Full Throttle Pepinic (Smart Little Pepinic x Peppys Rockin Angel) to the Snaffle Bit Futurity Limited Open Championship, earning $6,260 for owner Robert Klems, Jr. DeBie rode “Luke,” an eye-catch-
ing, blaze-faced sorrel stallion, to a 208 in the herd work, and then won the rein work round with a 216.5. A fast and furi- ous cow work earned a 218 from the judges and sealed the Championship. The Reserve Champion in the
Futurity Limited Open was Adan Banuelos on Cat Diesel (One Time Pepto x Cats Glamour Girl), a gelding owned by his mother, Tiffani Banuelos. Banuelos earned $5,008 when he scored a total 638 on three events.
Nicolas Barthelemy Rides TR Dual Shine to Limited Open Hackamore Championship A sparkling rein work plus an
above-average cow work equaled a championship for Nicolas Barthelemy, who won the Snaffle Bit Futurity Limited Open Hackamore title aboard TR Dual Shine (TR Dual Rey x Miss N Shine), owned by Sheri Jamieson, La Jolla, Calif.
Barthelemy piloted the 4-year-old
gelding to a 218 in the rein work, the highest of the round, and then scored a 214.5 on the cow. The Reserve Champion was Kelby
Phillips, riding Very Smart Playmate (Very Smart Remedy x Gunna Be Mine),
for owners Garth and Amanda Gardiner. They scored a 218 in the rein work and a 214 in the cow work for a 432 compos- ite, which paid $1,800.
Adan Banuelos Wins Level 1 Limited Open Futurity Championship On Cat Diesel
24-year-old Adan Banuelos took
the “less is more” theory to an entirely new level when preparing Cat Diesel (One Time Pepto x Cats Glamour Girl x High Brow Cat) for the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Level 1 Limited Open Futurity. Cat Diesel earned the $8,780
Limited Open Level 1 Futurity Championship when he scored a round- winning 219 in the herd work, a 208 in the rein work and a 215.5 in the cow work. The total 642.5 composite tied with AMR One Shiney Cat (Shady Lil Starlight x One Shiney Chic x Smart Chic Olena) and Morgan Cromer, but the tiebreaker, the higher fence work score, went in Banuelos’ favor. For the Reserve Championship,
Cromer garnered a check for $6,585 for AMR One Shiney Cat’s owner, Holy
Cow Performance Horses.
Kelby Phillips Rides Soula Jule Forever to Limited Open Bridle Championship What better way to impress your
new employers than winning a Championship at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity? Kelby Phillips, who works for Gardiner Quarter Horses, Ashland, Kans., did it when he won the Limited Open Bridle class on Garth and Amanda Gardiners' mare, Soula Jule Forever (Soula Jule Star x Forever Sparked x Shining Spark). Phillips, who began working as the
Gardiners’ resident trainer in May, guid- ed the fancy bay mare to a 216.5 in the rein work and 216 in the cow work for a 432.5.
The Limited Open Bridle Reserve
Champion was Jennifer Neel, riding Zezes Pepto Cat (Zeze Gunsmoke x Boons Cat x Peptoboonsmal). She guid- ed the stallion, owned by her parents, Tom and Lorna Neel, to a 211.5 in the rein work and 215 in the cow work.
