Just as important in California... A consortium of horse-related or-

ganizations based in New York has just issued a report on the equine in- dustry's economic impact in that state. The Report, entitled New York Equine Industry - Economic Impact Study was released last week by the New York Horse Racing & Agriculture Industry Alliance. Quote from the Press Release that

accompanied the Report: "A thriving equine industry is

vital to the health of the New York State economy, according to the re- sults of a study released today. The New York State Equine Industry Economic Impact Study determined that the equine industry has a $4.2 billion effect on the state’s economy and generates 33,000 full-time jobs. Equine commerce also results in $187 million in state and local taxes for New York. The thousands of horse farms, training centers and rid- ing stables doing business across the state preserve 1.3 million acres of open space. There are 157,500 horses in New York."

Bloodhorse magazine covered the release. Here's a link to coverage: http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse- racing/articles/73588/study-docu- ments-equine-industry-impact-in-ny Several years ago, the American

Horse Council did a national report on the economic impact of the horse industry with break-outs for individ- ual states. Here's a link to the reports for individual states, including CA: http://www.horsecouncil.org/state- breakout-studies-following-states In 1992, the California Thor-

oughbred industry commissioned an economic impact report from the De- partment of Agricultural Economics at UC Davis. We provide a link to the report in our on-line archive at California Authority of Racing Fairs here: http://calfairs.net/files/publica- tions/33.pdf
