GREAT RACE continued from page 16

OCTAVIAN continued from page 56

album “Simple Kind Of People” was not a huge seller, Octavian became established as a singles group, landing in the Top 10 in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and several Canadian markets over the next two years. “Round and Round” scored well in Montreal and

became the band’s second biggest hit. “Good Feeling to Know” earned Octavian a BMI “Canada Songwriters Award” in 1975. With a footprint established on the Canadian scene, it

was time to hit the road, back and forth across Canada, opening for more established artists or doing solo gigs, like the infamous van-shaking show at Britannia Beach in July 1977. Warren and the boys instantly noticed a different

crowd reaction once Octavian was being played on the radio: “It was a surreal experience when people came out

to see us, that we were being treated so differently. We hadn’t changed; they had. It was really exciting.” Octavian had reached the next tier for Canadian rock bands, a solid rep as a live band, fan recognition from

radio play and the creativity and talent to keep climbing. But without another record or label support, that’s where it peaked, and the glamour of the rock and roll life wears off quickly when you’re spending your life driving the back roads of Canada. The “Octavian Bus” put on thousands of miles before

it ended up in a smouldering heap at the side of Hwy 7 in 1979 with the band’s equipment “hanging in trees, submerged in six inches of swamp water”. Thankfully, the band and sleepy driver escaped injury,

but for some of the guys it was a sign that it was time to go their separate ways. Warren Barbour, Ray Lessard and John Livingston

relocated to Toronto, signed a deal with Attic Records and buried the Octavian name, becoming Chain Reaction. Today, although they are spread out across the

continent, the Octavian grads stay in touch, playing music together when the time is right. Warren Barbour is still writing and producing music, and keeping the flame alive through Facebook (“The Truth about Octavian”) and YouTube. Not only did Octavian make their mark nationally

with their blend on tight vocals and hard rock. They also helped move the Ottawa music scene into a new decade. It was time for bigger shows, bigger amps, bigger

lights, bigger hair, and better playing. Octavian delivered on all counts.
