ike many successful special- ized fitness businesses, ABC Financial started in a modest way.


Based on his own interest and in-


volvement in sports, founder and CEO Jim Bottin opened a martial arts studio in Arkansas in 1974. Five years later he had expanded to a chain of 13 fit- ness centres. As the company evolved, Bottin recognized the need for a software-based billing and payment


processing system to help his business and other similar operations. “Jim didn’t feel he was getting the


right solution from the people who were processing his payments, so he started to think about doing it him- self,” says ABC’s Chief Revenue Officer Steve Ayers. In 1981, Bottin created and invested


in his own payment processing soft- ware using his own experience as a fitness club owner. He launched the business to help fitness clubs and simi- lar facilities with their membership management, billing and collections, freeing them up to focus more on cus- tomer service, club management and growth. ABC, or American Billing Company,


proved so successful that Bottin’s cli- ent base expanded rapidly. Today, more than 4,000 fitness clubs – from small businesses to large name-brand franchises – throughout the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico use ABC’s technology-based services for their payment processing needs.
