Clariant spotlights sustainability and performance
S
wiss process materials specialist Clariant showcased a number of ecological
and economical solutions to meet the performance demands of the domestic paper industry at the China Paper 2012 show, held in September.
Clariant showcased process
materials that lower costs and simplify production through reduced machine maintenance, improved efficiency and lower energy consumption. Highlights included new Cartaspers deposit control solutions, Cartabond crosslinkers for improved quality in
Nip measurement system to make the invisible visible
An online and real-time measurement tool using the latest roll cover technology called NipVision has been launched by Voith. It is said to be the first system to measure nip pressure, profile and importantly the cover temperature while the paper machine is running. The actual conditions in
a pressed nip can now be analysed, says Voith. The NipVision glass fibre sensors are very small, non-aging, flexible and chemically resistant. They lie inside the cover, so that the roll application and dimensions remain unchanged. The sensors are so sensitive that they can detect the presence of paper in the nip.
The benefit of measuring
temperature within the cover while the paper machine is running is because of the amount of damage that can result from temperature-related issues. Until now the source of

poor profiles and sheet quality, increased sheet breaks and sudden roll cover damages have often been linked to a given press nip but, without any proof. With the help of NipVision these problems can be detected and prevented. The information from the sensors is transmitted to a computer which plots the profile across the width of the machine and over time. With specific software the conditions in the nip are shown simultaneously and synchronously. The system is powered through induction, allowing NipVision to constantly transmit information, 24 hours a day, while the paper machine is running. More information from Voith

World’s first portable felt moisture and permeability meter
An instrument that combines a sophisticated microwave meter, a water permeability meter, and a temperature sensor into the same unit has been launched by Cristini. Until now, the only way to monitor the moisture and water permeability in the press section clothing was with two separate instruments. This required an operator to access a paper machine twice, creating safety issues, and reduced the reliability of the measurements. These issues are addressed by
Cristini’s PermFlowDUO which provides a simultaneous reading at a high sampling rate, allows the production of unique and accurate on-board 3D maps of the felt moisture and permeability. The 3D map felt scan does not require any sensor positioning device, and can be sampled during the normal CMD scans by the powerful on-board processor. A full 3D map with good resolution requires normally only two minutes to scan. The instrument is provided with a full colour-range trigger which
is more precise and sensitive than the standard infra-red triggers, to synchronize the scans with the felt revolutions. The instrument does not require a PC to export the data: they are downloaded on common USB mass storage devices in .txt, xls, and custom formats, compatible with the most used data analysis & reporting PC software. Finally, a sophisticated algorithm highlights on the instrument screen the felt areas that are clogged or worn out, to help the paper maker to correctly plan felt changes, and felt cleaning intervals.
