Sealed bearings reduce maintenance in sludge press

A paper recycling firm is benefiting from four-times better bearing life and avoiding the costs of a regular partial shutdown, following the adoption of a new bearing design developed by NSK for a sludge press.

Bearings in a sludge press were

suffering from contamination. The conditions in the press were harsh: wet and dirty, resulting from water and pulp containing with printing inks and other substances. It meant that the machines had to be shut down every six months to replace the bearings.

The solution required a

sealed rollers (SLE series). After the customer had accepted

complete analysis and report of the operation of the bearings on the sludge press, services that NSK routinely performs across many market sectors as part of its asset improvement programme (AIP).

Following an extensive inspection of the paper recycling site and the sludge bearing housings, NSK proposed improving the quality of the bearing seals by using self- aligning roller bearings with

this recommendation, NSK first modified the bearing housings and then assisted with the installation of two test systems. The results were impressive: the service life of the bearings was improved to more than two years and additional savings were made in lubrication: both in quantity of lubricant used, and also the longer maintenance intervals.
