HOUSING PETS In the Home Advice from DIO Ops (Accommodation) on keeping pets in SFA
If you would like to keep a domestic pet in your Service Family Accommodation (SFA) you must seek permission. ‘Domestic pets’ in DIO terms means dogs, cats, rabbits and other small caged animals or birds…
T
he permission can be sought when first applying for SFA using the e-1132, or if you are currently in SFA, by emailing
or writing to the Housing Allocations Service Centre (HASC). You need to seek further permission (on an individual basis) if you then wish to bring more pets into your home.
DIO will consider any sensible written requests to keep animals not classed as a domestic pet, such as chickens, or a larger numbers of pets but this will be subject to the suitability of the property and the impact it is likely to have on neighbours. With any potentially dangerous or exotic animals, larger animals such as horses or farm animals such as goats, pigs or sheep however, the answer would be ‘no’.
The MoD does have the right to revoke consent for keeping pets should you (or the pets!) break any of the rules set out in JSP 464 Chapter 7. Pet owners, especially dog and cat owners, living in SFA do also have other responsibilities, shown on the diagram.
When Moving Out When moving out of the SFA occupants need to ensure the home is suitably cleaned so that it meets the Move Out standard and provide proof that action has been taken to ensure it is free of any evidence of pets having been kept in the property. Carpets, floor coverings, fixtures and fittings all need to be are left clean and free of infestation and any garden areas damaged by pets should be made good.
Also required at Move Out is evidence that the floor coverings and/or soft
furnishings (in the case of cats and dogs) have had an appropriate pesticide and/or deodorising treatment applied. If a Pre- Payment Cleaning Scheme is being used, occupants should inform them that pets have been kept in the property.
If an infestation re-occurs shortly after leaving the property, the occupants remains liable for further charges so the problem can be addressed.
