After the carving, each piece is coated with up to sixteen coats of clear lacquer. I continued to make the pieces right up to the redundancy period but still at this time had no idea what the future would bring and what career path I would take.
Even though I was actively looking for work, I found people became more and
more interested in purchasing the pieces I had made. And in Aug 11 I took the next step and set up PolyStone Designs, named after the type of paint used, Polyurethane, and Stone after the effect that the lightweight finished pieces resemble.
Being made redundant had became my worst nightmare and I felt some degree of anger. But it was that feeling that made me more determined to make something of PolyStone. I cannot say that it hasn’t been a hard year since setting up the business because it has, with repeated highs and lows.

I think the biggest high came when the media, both television and radio, became interested in what I was doing earlier this year. The lows came when I didn’t know when the next sale or commission would come from. Even now the business is still in its infancy and every day I face the challenge of not knowing where the future will lead. But because my wife and family have such faith in me, I am determined to see the business mature and shine.
