made by the Goss pottery, identifiable by the goss-hawk factory mark on the base of their items. Any broken or chipped pieces are costly to have repaired and hence virtually valueless. There are however still many serious collectors who have large collections usually relating to a town or village, or to a specific collecting theme, which can make an impressive display. Readers may recall that the former computer shop in the old library building had a fine display of local crested ware in cabinets just inside the doorway. I was always amused to see some lighthouses with the Tavistock crest in this collection.
This season Tavistock Museum has its own collection of local crested ware and other early tourism memorabilia on show in our new sloping cabinets. The Tavistock crest-of-arms is distinctive featuring a lion, fleur- de-lys and fleece, these refer to the town’s loyalty to the Crown, to the
Virgin who shared the Abbey dedication, and to the local wool industry. Besides Tavistock miniatures such as an elephant, a golf ball, and a WW1 ambulance, there are also some from surrounding villages such as a Mary Tavy banjo. It is a collection theme the museum would like to
develop so if you have any unwanted Tavistock or local villages crested ware items or early tourism souvenirs now needing a good home please consider donating them to the museum.
Tavistock Museum is open daily 11.00 am to 3.00 pm daily until the 31st October.
