TAVISTOCK RECORDED MUSIC SOCIETY CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2011 - 2012

By Chairman: Paul Lindsay

It is with regret that I have to inform members of the retirement from the committee of Eddie White and Alan Wynn-Jones. Alan was Treasurer for six years and followed that with a spell as Chairman until 2009; Since then he has been our Archivist, loaning some of his space to house many of the records of the society.

Eddie has been on the committee as Programme Secretary since 1992; without his input it is doubtful that the Society would have been as successful as it is nowadays. He has been responsible for selecting the speakers and putting the list to the committee, contacting them and then arranging dates – not the easiest of jobs when you consider that there are twenty presentations a year. He has also liaised with the speakers to make sure that they provide a copy of their running order for the operator, and a copy of their notes for Jean Gribble’s input into the Tavistock Gazette. This last season, our twenty fifth, must be looked upon as one our most successful in the last decade.

We have increased our membership considerably, and we have made a profit, as the Treasurer will tell you later. We have had eighteen presentations, including one from Nimbus records, the Festive evening and our Tea Party celebrating the Silver Jubilee of the Society, and also participated in the Christmas Tree Festival at St Eustachius. As a result of these improved finances, I can see no reason (other than the Hotel increasing its rates) that the current membership fees and entrance price should have to rise in the next season. If possible, I should like to see the number of members increasing, and the Society continue its diverse musicality for many years yet. Finally, but not least, I should like to thank my fellow committee members for the help they have given me throughout my third year as Chairman, and also to Edna Bailey who has carried on greeting members and taking their money at the door.
