FITNESS LEAGUE EXERCISE CLASSES
The Fitness League, formerly known as The Women’s League of Health and Beauty is one of the best forms of progressive exercises for women of all ages and abilities. It was begau in the 1930s by Mary Bagot Stack whose aim was to make exercise classes available to women from all backgrounds, an unheard of concept at the time, being between the wars and women only just receiving the right to vote.
During her travels to India Mary
was impressed by the fluid and easy movements of the Indian women and began to develop her own fitnessprogramme and regime “for graceful deportment and figure training” which became the basic format for exercises we use today. As a contemporary of Joseph Pilates, the exercise systems they developed
separately both had the same aim,
“core-stability” (Pilates) and central-control (Bagot Stack) as the basis from which all good posture and good movement flow. Fitness League classes consist of a low impact full body workout set to music, part exercise and part dance. It’s a unique and holistic system based on yoga, remedial health exercises and movement, our main aim is achieving good posture and balance through
exercise and to maintain it in movement and dance. We do this through our progressive exercises which mobilises joints,
strengthens and lengthens muscles and improves flexibility, co-ordination and stamina. Good posture being the key ingredient to looking good and feeling healthier – it works!
So why do it?....Apart from
giving ourselves a treat and some much needed “ME TIME” a one hour class a week is exactly what your mind and body needs. It’s a
chance to meet new people, make new friends, enjoy moving to music and get fitter too! A regular class also helps cope with the natural ageing process, is beneficial in preventing osteoporosis and assists in keeping older people more active and independent for much longer. Classes are taught instead of adopting a “follow me” approach and we develop classes suitable to our members by caring and actually listening to your needs. It’s fun, friendly and quite frankly a breath of fresh air!
Classes start in Tavistock on Tuesday 11th September at 10.30am in Tavistock Town Hall.
Look forward to seeing you there.
