TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones

for your laptop. You can turn your phone into a hotspot very easily, but on some phones, the menu is quite well tucked away and on Android it is called tethering. This means that there is no need to get a mobile dongle before you go away. It does though rely on your mobile signal speed in the area you are in; so do not bother if you live in Buckland Monachorum. With the price of data roaming coming down to around £2 this is a real option for keeping up with work while abroad; if you have to!

Smartphones are great for all sorts of things, but they are also fantastic to give you the internet if there isn’t a wifi hotspot around

If you are going to buy a laptop. make absolutely certain that it has HDMI. We always make sure of this with all the laptops we sell. The reason is very straightforward; you can load hundreds of videos onto your laptop and when you go on holiday if you take an HDMI cable with you, then you can keep everyone entertained with movies played through the television in your holiday home, rather than all huddling round the laptop. It means therefore you do not have to fill your cases with lots of DVD disks either. Don’t forget of course that you can view everything else on the laptop through the TV too, so play music, look at photos etc.

Do not go looking for a telephone number to call Microsoft as you will more than likely get a number that will lead to you speaking to an altogether different organisation that will make any issues you had with your computer very much worse. The scammers are everywhere I am afraid and they still seem to be phoning very many of you purporting to be from Microsoft, but they really are not. They will show you all sorts of dreadful things that are “wrong” with your computer and then get money from you to fix it. The issue is though that there was nothing wrong in the first place. Beware.

If you have not already worked out why, then the reason your email account does not want to send mail while you are away from home is because of “mail relay”. This also means that your email account will not work on your smartphone or iPad either. Mail Relay is one of those good ideas that turned out to be a bad idea after all. It was designed to stop spammers, but now, it just gets in the way. You either need to find a way of sending emails by using a ‘workaround’ or you will need to change your email account or set up another one for travelling. As ever though, we can explain in more detail.

The Macmillan cancer charity holds its annual Coffee Morning on Friday 28th September. Carol is holding an open house to raise money for this worthwhile cause and will

Be sure to take an HDMI cable with you on holiday so you can keep everyone entertained with movies, music and photos through the TV rather than all huddling around your laptop
