ENTERTAINMENT NORFOLKBRAWDS

Outline: Roller Derby is quite a violent sport, have any of you had a serious injury? Philthy Delphia: If played right it shouldn’t be TOO violent, but we have had one concussion, a broken thumb, torn knee ligaments and a few very battered ankles!

O:Your skate names are so great! How do you come up with them? P: Some people come up with something that comes from their name (ie Rosie Collett = Colletteral Damage), some relate to something personal about themselves and some just find a really good play on words (Al O’Fear-her).

O: Roller Derby has a lot of feminism and punk messages surrounding it, do you think these are important in the sport? P: I do. Although the lipstick and fishnets have taken a back burner recently to the athleticism and tactical side, I think that what makes derby special is that it celebrates all types of women. Tere’s a much broader range of ages, body types and backgrounds then you might find on a typical netball team.

O: Roller Derby is hardly a game they teach in P.E. at school (unfortunately). How did you get into it?

STORIES

FUTURE SWING

You have your very own sweet flavour of electro swing, 'Ghetto Swing' - what sets you apart from the rest of the crowd? Electro swing or Ghetto swing as we’ve so humbly labeled it, is a merging of music styles including but not isolated to, Swing, Jazz, Dixieland, Big Band and old Blues, bedding down with the most recent of production methods and arriving at a sound that is: fun but heavy, full but dusty and clean but down right dirty. We borrow bits from the grandfather greats’ sounds and feel our emphasis on the moodier feelings sets us apart from the flock.

You're a mighty connection - what unnatural, or natural force brought you together? Instigated by the cosmos and maintained by the booze.

One of my closest friends (Ginger Vitis) was playing for the Philly Roller Girls: Liberty Belles and I thought to myself ‘If they had a team in Norwich, I would so do it’. When I got back I found out they did! I think a lot of girls came to the sport through the film Whip It!

O: We heard about your new rock and roll sponsors! Congrats! How did that conversation with Te Darkness come about? P: One of our refs (Ref Leppard) knew them from school so he got in touch. It was good timing because just as we were starting our first serious bouting season as a team, they were putting together a new album.

O: To anyone who is in the dark about the sport, can you give us a very brief overview of Roller Derby? P: A bout is made up of jams, which last up to two minutes each. One girl from each team are called the jammers. Tey wear a star on their helmet and it is their job to score points. Tey need to get through the pack without committing any penalties. Tere are two thirty- minute halves and whoever has the most points at the end, wins! See? Simple!

What's the best gig you've played to date? All our shows have had their own individual highlights but to name a single standout would have to be when we closed the stage at Lovebox Festival in London 2011. Tey only had a license until 11pm so they literally pulled the plug on us mid song and the lights went out. It was dead silent and some not-so-happy campers felt the ending was a little abrupt. So Josh the trombone player did an acoustic solo, formed a conga line and lead 200 people from the stage through the closed festival. At the end of it, there was just the band left on the stage and a baron dancefloor and we could hear them chanting away in the distance. Tat was an experience. Te tattooed community is one that loves to party - are you looking forward to joining the fray? In all fairness we are a little apprehensive but can't wait to sink our teeth into the crowd. BEWARE!

Do you have any ink of your own? Maybe you should get some done at the convention…? Bits and bobs but nothing too impressive, maybe it will be an appropriate time to ad to the canvas.
