stown, Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your candle light vigil – that candle burns for a life that was truly blessed, but not as blessed as he blessed ours. That Kadian was a remarkable child – none of us need to say. Sam reminded us today that Kadian once walked into the Health Food Store on 45, and the owner froze, her mouth dropped open, she came around the corner and said, “your son’s an angel.” At first our reaction was to look at her nervously as she sounded so convinced, but Kadian’s reaction, was typical, he smiled in warmth and didn’t judge her. He knew she needed him to be an angel. It was that simple. Did ever such happiness exist in a child? The years in Shepherdstown, the home-school- ing community we were a part of, the endless pa- rades with Duke, Kadian buying Chocolate Crois- sants every Saturday at the Bakery, walking down the street in his bare feet to the Farmer’s Market, lemonade stands at the corner of the Firehall, going down the town run from behind the JSB parking lot on Washington St, under the Firehall to the Smith House on an innertube; climbing Birchie, the tree in the meadow behind the hard- ware store; letting the Valentine girls dress him up in a tutu and high heels with red lipstick and walking down Mainstreet with a sparkly purse; the countless walks with Milo, swinging in Car- los’ upstairs hammocks at the numerous shin- digs, tickling people in the Firehall basement at the haunted house – oh how he loved Hallow- een with its endless miles of Candy and Store Fronts. He had all the chocolate supplies pegged in town; loved picking gifts at German St. Coffee and Candlery; earned his first Apple Computer by shoveling snow in the year of the blizzards,

The Halibut Parties in May, jumping the stream walls by McMurran Hall, cruising on his scooter, and walking around with Duke. He ran the “Vote For Duke” campaign outside of the Men’s Club by handing out flyers with lollie pops. So Duke became Mr. January. The endless canoe trips on the Antietam, swinging on the rope swing at the watering hole, and NUTTERS!!!! Cycling to school at Morgan Academy. Maria’s Taquaria’s special dish named after Duke, reading hour at the li- brary with Anne, piano lessons with Ruth Rauber- tas and Scott Beard, Halloween pumpkin patch at Ridgefield Farm, the maze, chopping xmas trees, interview with Dabney Chapman on his life, the potlucks at the Firehall – oh how he loved those. Pizza Parties in Tony’s garden after soccer prac- tice. His picture being printed in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post looking bored when Hillary Clinton came to town because he was an Obama Supporter. And he won his state-wide essay on Obama which won him 4 tickets to the inauguration where we froze. Do- ing the Parrot Sketch at Morgan Academy which we will post again because it is such classic Ka- dian. The forty-foot happy birthday banner for his 13th birthday dropped from the tower. Rid- ing around with Duke and Sam in the back of our Dodge pickup truck. There are so many more, but our broken hearts are too tired to go on. You all have been wonderful. He had fourteen per- fect years. He was a perfect boy. He was grow- ing into a perfect man. He was our beautiful, happy, cheerful and charming, angel. Thank you so much for coming out tonight to celebrate Kadian’s life. We love you all.
