Abu Dhabi boasts some of the finest hotels in theMiddle East, including a newfive-star luxury hotel,which features a host of extravagant fixtures and fittings, including a unique internal Solar Shading solution from Levolux.Australian based architect, DBI Designwere responsible for designing the building’s exterior, interior and landscaping. Following a challenging brief, Levoluxworked collaborativelywith the architect and the client to develop a customSolar Shading solution to be applied internally against the south-facing elevation of the central lobby. To combat excessive solar heat gain and glare levels, Levolux created a unique solution comprising a series of fully automated,motorised, tensioned Roller Blinds. WINNINGDESIGNFOR LUXURY PENTHOUSE REVEALED


The 2011NDANationalDesignAward, organised by the interior design school; theNationalDesignAcademy,was aimed at design students throughout the UK and required entrants to consider the entire interior of the PenthouseApartment located at RiverCresent inNottingham; from the layout and furniture down to accessories and final touches. The allocated budgetwas £100,000. Thewinner, 21 year old final year BA(Hons) studentGraceMoulder


fromDarlington,won a £3000 cash prize, a one year studentmembership of BIIDand professional photographs of her design, alongwith the chance to kick-start her design career byworkingwith interior design professionals to implement herwinning design. Describing her design,Grace said: “I had a look at the other River


Crescent apartments and theywere based around famous designers like Paul Smith,Chanel andHugo Boss; I focussedmine aroundDior by using simple clear streamlines and a classicmineral colour palette. Themain apartment areawas a huge open space, so I created a layout that had clearly defined zones by using shapes andmaterials tomould themand I used key focal points to drawpeople inwith a bit of a 'wow' factor." In addition to the overallwinner, the award recognised five other short

BESPOKE FURNITURE FOR CONNAUGHTHOUSE


Strata Panels has manufactured bespoke bedroom furniture for a three star hotel in London against a tight three-week deadline. The Connaught House Hotel near London City Airport was converting staff accommodation into 17 top quality bedrooms to meet both the airport market and the forthcoming Olympics.When a previous supplier was unable to meet the opening deadline Strata Panels were called in to design, quote, build and install. Each bedroom was different and required individual design to provide the best furniture combination. All furniture was made in 18mm thick melamine faced MDF panels in Lugano Oak.
