Design Studio Graven Images’ latest project, Ruffians, took the design teamback home to Scotland to create amasculine and yet refined barber shop. Ruffians opened inMarch 2012 in a vibrant part of Edinburgh, and is already proving to be a huge success. The design ismeant to complement the relaxed, playful atmosphere,which starts from themoment a customer enters the shop. Ruffians doesn’t have a reception; instead customers perch on specially designed “iPad High Tables”,where they can enjoy a (Ruffians designed) cup of coffee and catch up on Twitter and emailswhile theywait. BuckleyGrayYeoman has completed the design of Fred Perry’s newstore in theWestfield StratfordCity shopping centre, London, creating a retail space that merges contemporary designwith the fashion brand’s rich 60-year heritage. The centrepiece of the design is an anamorphic artwork of Fred Perry’s famous laurel
wreath.Made inHackney, close to the architects’ stu- dio, the sculpture consists of 32 suspended brass leaves that run the length of the retail space.When viewed fromthe front of the store, the leaves align to create a complete image of the laurelwreath, but as customersmove around the artwork it transforms into layers, creating different shapes and
patterns.This experiential element of the design runs throughout the project,which features several elements that playwith the idea of viewpoint and scale. The store has been designedwith a calm, open approach to layout and a

100% Design is strengthening its commitment to international young designers by creating a dedicated area called Emerging Brands at this year’s event. On displaywill be the

The traditional barber chairs by Takara Belmont, in a special Ruffian’s blue, are a visual highlight; the vivid blue contrasts beautifullywith the darker tones and rough timber used throughout the shop. Themain cutting area is painted in grey and featureswarmtimber panelling. A solid oak cutting table, in the style of a craftsman’sworkbench, provides the focal point.

flooring.Awalkway running through the centremarks a division between the apparel and footwear&accessories areas. Products are displayed on eight concrete tablets, positioned in a linear arrangement that forms a 12meter-long spine through the store that also creates seating for customers.
As of September 2012 KLC School of Design will introduce a one year Level 6 BA (Hons) Interior Design course as a progression route for students who have successfully completed the Level 5 KLC Diploma in Interior Design (subject to specific admissions criteria). This, therefore, opens up the potential for career changers to achieve a degree in two years of study. One of the unique characteristics of this BA (Hons) course is that it offers students a genuinely collaborative engagement with professional practitioners enabling the sharing of wisdom, experience, up- to-date skills, knowledge and methods of practice alongside respect for scholarship. The challenging and carefully focused curriculum has been developed to provide further opportunities for study, research and critical analysis in order to broaden the students’ technical knowledge and skills and enhance their intellectual development to meet the increasing demands of the industry.
