You have been hearing a lot about engagement lately. The Association Board declared 2011–12 as the “Year of Engagement” and, along with Randolph College, has worked hard to offer our alumnae and alumni many opportunities to make a difference at the College.

Last fall, the Association Board held an official “kickoff” of the program, and 100 percent of the Leadership Council attendees— including all members of the Association Board—expressed their support of the College by making a donation to the Annual Fund. That is very impressive! The Association Board members have focused their attention on highlighting the numerous ways our alumnae and alumni can get involved, including student referrals, chapter meeting planning, volunteering with the Association, mentoring our students and young graduates, and giving to the Annual Fund.

We have 33 chapters and 23 contact areas throughout the world. Many of these chapters are very active and have found unique and important ways to bring our alumnae and alumni together with one another and with our students. For instance, our Boston, Charlotte, Lynchburg, and Washington D.C. chapters sent “goodie bags” to current students who were from their areas during exams. The Lynchburg chapter provides all first-years with candy and flowers on Valentine’s Day and at the end of the year during exams. This spring, students competing in the 2012 Model United Nations in New York were invited to a chapter event. Efforts like these allow our alumnae and alumni to reach out to our students and provide a special opportunity to bridge our past and present.

If you live near one of our more active chapters, you know how important these connections can be. If you are near a chapter that is less active, we encourage you to volunteer your time to help increase the number of chapter events and the number of alumnae and alumni attending. This is your alumnae and alumni Association. How much impact this organization can have depends on each of you and your willingness to be involved, to volunteer your time, and to give back. The more each chapter takes on, the more you will be able to accomplish—for each other, for our students, and for the College.

Susan and I have traveled across the country attending more than 60 chapter events during the past five years. These have been wonderful opportunities to meet our interesting alumnae and to learn about the College’s rich past. I encourage you to continue supporting the Association and the College. Together, we can continue providing future generations of graduates life-long contacts with old and new friends and with the College.
