LAST CALL! Autumn “Getaway” in Tuscany September 29–October 7, 2012

Val d’ Orcia

Iconic views abound in Tuscany! Immerse yourself for two days in Florence’s rich cultural heritage, followed by five full days in the Chianti Hills and the breathtaking Val d’Orcia, exploring medieval hill towns, visiting private gardens, and savoring the food and wine

for which Tuscany is famous. Capping our unique sojourn will be a visit with alumna author Frances Mayes ’62 at her villa outside Cortona. A few spaces remain for this jewel of a trip!

Greek Temples and Wildflowers: Sicily April 16–28, 2013

The Acropolis at Selinunte-Sicily

Persephone’s island is at its most enthralling in April, when wildflowers carpet wondrous landscapes steeped in history. Beginning in Palermo, the epicenter of Sicily’s “Golden Age” under the Normans, enjoy dazzling sightseeing, including some of Europe’s finest Greek, Roman, and medieval treasures, and experience evocative, off-the-beaten-path places not included in other tours. A thrilling excursion on Mt. Etna and three nights in Taormina’s most historic hotel—with a private garden overlooking the sea—will round out our exciting journey.

Gület under sail along the Turquoise Coast

Turkey: Istanbul and the “Turquoise Coast” May 8-20, 2013

An astonishing number of classical sites await our discovery along the spectacular Aegean and Mediterranean Turkish coast from Ephesus to Antalya. From well-appointed hotels and a spacious private Turkish yacht, or gület, we’ll explore Ionic temples, Greek and Roman theaters, Lycian tombs with temple- like façades hewn into rock cliffs, Crusader fortresses, and Byzantine ruins on abandoned islands or below the surface of the turquoise sea. Fresh Mediterranean cuisine will delight us throughout the trip, and our Turkish through-guide is top notch.

Journeys of History and the Imagination:

Summer Seminar in Reading, England June 6–9, 2013

Join us for a long weekend exploring the culture, symbolism, and social impact of Anglo-American travel and trade. Together we will consider the long and frequently brutal process of developing Atlantic trade, the dawn of travel for pleasure, the powerful economic and social transformations that were brought about by the expansion of shipping, and the long-lasting legacy of travel on the imagination. The seminar will be based out of the College’s houses in Reading. Seminars and discussions will be complemented by field trips.
