COMMUNITY
We played together, as well as a few solos, and we put together an American med- ley, which included tunes like Marching Through Georgia and Swanee River.’ maker’s camera was not the only one the musicians faced up to after attracting the at- tention of local media in Al- buquerque. ‘We had a bit of a nasty in- cident there,’ said Angus. the Saturday night we were pretty knackered and want- ed to get back to the van. ‘But when we went to the car park, it had gone. ‘It turned out it had been towed away but we weren’t able to get it until Monday morning!’
St Louis, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Lubbock and the Grand Canyon.
And for Angus, who has travelled the world through his piping, it was one of the best trips yet.
‘My piping has taken me to California, Canada, New
Zealand, Egypt and even Stornoway but those three weeks down route 66 were probably the best yet. It was a one-off.
‘The audiences were used to pipes and drums, so they were educated and really appreciated what we did.
Such was the outcry from the quintet’s Albuquerque fans, the local television news ran a story on their dilemma. But it wasn’t all bad news, as Angus explained: ‘I couldn’t pick out one part of the trip as my favourite; we had great craic the whole time and the scenery was so dif- ferent wherever you went. ‘We would be in the middle driving through the desert, where there was sand as far as you could see, all around you.
‘If there was one part that stuck out, it would be play- ing at the Grand Canyon. No-one was there to hear us but just to say you’ve played there is quite special.’
