‘Hopefully I’ll be able to do this for a while because I don’t know what else I would want to do.’

For a rugby fan like Allan, there are perks to the job. He is eligible for tickets to Scotland’s home matches and is a regular visitor to the national stadium at Murray-      takes more pride in what he is achieving at a local level. ‘For me, the biggest perk is being part of Scottish rugby and being one of the people helping to grow the sport in this country,’ he said. While participation is in- creasing, Allan admits his work isn’t all plain sailing, especially when it comes to facilities. ‘My job is great fun when the weather is as good as it has been this summer but it’s not great on a cold and wet De- cember morning. ‘That’s why the lack of indoor facilities across the country is a big problem. Everyone raves about the 3G pitches we have because it allows us to play in all weathers and keeps the children’s feet dry. ‘But the young kids still hate it when it’s pouring down, even if it is on a 3G pitch. They are not going to be in- terested in taking up rugby if they are miserable when they are playing. As a coun- try, we are quite far behind in that respect.’ All things considered, though Allan believes Argyll and Bute rugby is on the rise. ‘We have more kids playing now than we have done for a

long time and that is mainly down to the volunteers at the various clubs,’ he said. ‘They have made sure we have more kids playing, more events and more new teams,

so the level of development I strive for wouldn’t happen without them.’
