property 47 University of Reading's thank you to donors
Haslams Chartered Surveyors were delighted to sponsor the University of Reading’s `Donor Day` for the third year running especially having acted as surveyors to the University for over 85 years – indeed since 1924 when the University moved the Whiteknights Campus
This year's annual 'Donor Day' attracted 200 sponsors and the event provided the University an opportunity to say a personal thank you to those who have helped to raise over £30 million to enhance the student experience and support cutting edge research at the University. The event brought together alumni donors from across the decades, corporate sponsors,
friends, staff and current students, who all joined to celebrate the positive difference that philanthropy makes across the University.
Senior partner Steven Smith commented: “Donor Day is an annual event and we are pleased to support the University in this area. The University is central to so much of what Reading and the Thames Valley
is all about – high-class research, student advancement, and being an economic success”.
Another new recruit from the University
Haslams Chartered Surveyors is delighted to announce the appointment of Eilidh McAllister as a graduate in its commercial agency and development department. McAllister graduated from the University of Reading in the Summer 2011.
“We are delighted that Eilidh has joined Haslams. We are committed in providing our current and future clients with the expertise and capacity necessary
to fulfil their aims and objectives. One of the ways we are ensuring this is by having a strong and well resourced team,” commented Neil Seager, partner.
McAllister’s appointment follows the recent acquisition of new partner Stephen Holt from Parkinson Holt, who joined the partnership to head up the firm’s lease advisory and rating division in December.
“Despite these challenging times
we are committed to growing. It is easy to make the decision to recruit in a buoyant market but to take the plunge now in our view will bear fruit in the longer term” explained Conrad Hill, managing partner.

SEGRO successfully lets speculative development to data centre provider, Gyron, in a 20-year deal
SEGRO, Europe’s leading owner-manager and developer of industrial property, has announced that Gyron, the specialist data centre service provider, has signed a 20-year lease for a 30,000 sq ft building on the Slough Trading Estate as it looks to expand its UK data centre footprint.
Gyron will be occupying a building in Ajax Avenue, which was developed as part of a 124,000 sq ft speculative building programme started by SEGRO on the Slough Trading Estate in 2011.
This letting to Gyron means that 73% of this speculative build activity has now been let either before or shortly
after practical completion. The remaining 33,000 sq ft is due to be completed in August.
Robin Balen, managing director of Gyron, said: “The Ajax facility is a fantastic opportunity to offer new and existing customers access to our environmentally friendly Tier IV aligned facilities in geographically diverse locations for disaster recovery and business continuity solutions.”
Paul Lewis, SEGRO’s regional director responsible for Industrial in the Thames Valley, added, “We are delighted that Gyron have chosen the Slough Trading Estate as the business location at which to expand its data centre footprint in the

UK. Our decision to undertake speculative development last year was borne out of market demand and the programme has ensured that we’re well positioned to take advantage of current opportunities. We’re particularly pleased to have completed the letting of this development a month after the building was finished.”
This is the second deal that Gyron has signed with SEGRO over the past 12 months, following its 8,175 sq m data centre letting at the Maylands Wood Estate in Hemel Hempstead in July 2011.
SEGRO has successfully established itself as one of the UK’s leading providers
of facilities for data centre operators. The company sees this as a key area of growth as it seeks to deliver higher value uses from its multi-let industrial estates, in line with the strategy it announced in November 2011.
The new letting is part of the ongoing success of the redevelopment on the Slough Trading Estate. Over the past five years SEGRO has developed more than 1 million sq ft of new space on the Trading Estate, all of which is let, bar the remaining 33,000 sq ft (mentioned above). In respect of its current plans this year SEGRO is completing 360,000 sq ft of new space on the Slough Trading Estate in seven projects with 91% of the space already being let.

Haslams Chartered Surveyors is increasingly involved in the education sector. From a social charter perspective we are involved within the Reading Real Estate Foundation and one of our partners mentors students on a regular basis. We are also surveyors and valuers to many independent schools. As one example we have recently been instructed by two major schools locally to carry out a portfolio valuation of over 30 of their properties and with another school we are currently dealing with the project design and build of a new sports hall.
