sentations and, of course, essential workshops to help student transporters run their operations the best they can.
NEW TO THE EXPO One of the two pre-conference seminars this year is the result
of a partnership between STN and the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI). Te train-the-trainer course, titled “Te Preventative Tech- niques,” outlines CPI’s training program and teaches those who take the course how to deffuse violent or potentially violent situ- ations on the school bus. Whether it results from bullying or students with behavioral
challenges tied to developmental disabilities, for example, many school bus drivers and aides are concerned for their personal safety during violent incidents. Ten there are many districts consolidating routes and grouping students of different ages, and who might have special needs, on the same bus. According to an American Association of School Adminis-
trators report published in March, about 25 percent of district members who responded to a survey said school staff have been threatened or assaulted by students. Tirty percent said staff members have been hospitalized during the past five years to treat resulting injuries. Tose who complete this six-hour course on July 21 will re-
ceive the necessary information to help reduce injuries to both students and transportation staff.
Te other pre-conference seminar addresses the important
topic of child passenger safety restraint systems on school buses as part of NHTSA’s eight-hour course. Tis year’s EXPO includes the new and fun IndustrySOCiAL
event set for July 24 shortly after the trade show. Building upon the magazine’s social networking portal, this premiere event is the living, breathing version of
STNSOCiAL.com, where attend- ees and exhibitors can network beyond the booth and simply relax and have fun. After attending workshops that cover serious topics, the IndustrySOCiAL event aims to set a casual and light- hearted tone to mark the end of the day.
DENNYISMS, DEAL OR NO DEAL AND 3-D Tree general sessions are led by some fa-
miliar industry veterans such as the School Bus Training Company’s Denny Coughlin and Educa- tion Compliance Group’s Peggy Burns. As many in the industry know or recognize
