A Hall County (Ga.) Schools employee fills up one of the district’s 20 new Blue Bird Vision school buses powered by propane autogas. District officials estimate these vehicles will help save $36,000 in fuel costs this year.
years ago, Platenberg said his predecessor had already purchased electric vehicles for the service fleet. “Ten we invested in the hybrid school bus two years ago,” he
said. “One of the things I like about Tomas is their whole phi- losophy on the zero-footprint carbon emissions.” In recent years, LCPS has received several honors from Energy
Education, earned the EPA’s Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award and won the Green Public Schools Challenge Award. “I’m pleased with the energy that has been created not only
from transportation but also across the whole enterprise,” said Platenberg, adding that he turned around the food services de- partment in two years while incorporating sustainable initiatives.
Industry insiders celebrated Hall County’s purchase of 20 propane school buses in May, including (from left): Todd Mouw, ROUSH CleanTech; Shooter Roberts, Yancey Bus Sales; Phil Horlock, Blue Bird Corp.; and Jewel Armor and William Schofield of Hall County Schools.
“It’s about cost savings but it’s also about doing the right thing.” Farther south, Georgia Tech University has developed a hy-
draulic hybrid school bus through a $50,000 grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund, and the team of undergraduate and grad- uate engineering students have had the opportunity to teach Atlanta elementary students hands-on lessons in sustainability. Students from Mary Lin Elementary School student painted the bus green on May 16 and organized a drive to collect used cook- ing oil for processing into biodiesel. Dr. Michael Leamy is leading the engineering students as
they study the efficiencies of this new technology. The project also includes a cost-benefit analysis of a large-scale conversion
