before I knew it I had esteemed Doctors listening to me at 21 on how to change their current system or start their own practice
the earth to recruit a web developer I ran out of money and the site wasn’t complete. I was desperate and even attempted to read up on web developing myself, one of which told me I wouldn’t leave my bedroom for six months! Jamie told me if I couldn’t manage my money I would fail and I went for 6 months with no progress. People who have not started their own company expect constant progress, especially when you have the likes of Mark Zuckerberg creating Facebook in two days. That was a low point.”
Just in time, Melissa’s luck turned around and an old friend who happened to be web-savvy offered to work on the concept, believing in the idea. With no spare cash, Melissa offered her friend a small portion of equity
and the pair worked together on the website throughout the night and on weekends.
Melissa then tells me that her parents provided a source of strength and belief, reminding her why she had began on this entrepreneurial journey. “I knew it would work and everyone I told thought it was a brilliant concept. I’d always wanted to do my own thing and work for myself and this was my starting point.” We then discuss how supportive the entrepreneurial community can be, in which she mentions accountancy firm FreeAgent for their help in nurturing the company. “FreeAgent offered our self-employed network locums free accountancy software and even helped to organise and provide drinks for our website launch party. They’ve been a huge support!”
So what does Melissa have planned for the future of the company? “I want to build and sell it to an existing recruitment agency or locum agency because there are a few big ones. I also want it to apply to not just doctors, but nurses, dentists, the list goes on. I’ve loved shaking things up within the NHS but I see myself expanding into other ventures.”
